Some time ago I rented a pick up truck to move some stuff from our old condo to new apartment . Most stuff I have are things in cardboard boxes, luggage bags, shoe boxes, small chairs, hiking equipment , bikes , some loose toys , in a word, it’s a mess. Of course I had the confidence that I would do a nice job before I went on packing the stuff, but the reality just taught a lesson. When the trunk is full I just stared at the mess I created, said to myself, I just did that? OK, I actually did that. I said to myself that there was no way I could go ahead like this, What would happen to me if I did drive like this? most likely the big mess would just throw themselves off the truck and there would be high probability to cause accidents, or I got stopped by police officer before anything could happen and got ticket and points.
Let’s see what I could do now, I could start over and try to tidy them up and tie them down or simply find something to hold them together, in a word, I need something to tie my stuff down in the trunk, and this “something” can’t be too big or too expensive. Would I have to buy something like 4600lbs working load limit binder chain or 3333lbs ratchet straps ? Not likely. No heavy duty stuff needed here, what I need is something which can safe guard the stuff in the trunk.
I dived into the tie down world for something can be used with my pick up and the tie downs may not to overkill for my situation, first I came across 1” ratchet straps, 6 or 9 feet, but with 2000 or 3000lb strength they were overkill in a sense, even the price was pretty good, for the same reason those cam buckle straps were not good choice, all I could see was something too much in strength, too little in real world use, I don’t think the ratchet straps could improve my situation there, 1” straps weren’t helpful here. Besides, 1” ratchet straps won’t be able to hold a lot small pieces together at all. Then I ran into this gem: cargo nets for pick ups, the size is 48”x60” which is ideal for my truck, just put the cargo net on top the pile then tie it down, you’re all set. With cargo nets come bungee cords , the bungee cords are just perfect for tying down cargo net, in fact the cargo net is made of interconnected bungee cords! To say the least, both cargo net and bungee cord are commercial tie downs compare to industrial tie downs, which means they are light duty and small in size, and they are mostly being used to hold small stuff. And you can put these light duty tie downs to some creative use as you see fit, they are just perfect for passenger cars and small trucks.
